Kernersville, NC

3 Things to know about kernersville nc:

  1. Railroad & Growth

    • The arrival of the railroad in 1873 was a major turning point for Kernersville, bringing economic growth and accelerating the town’s development.

    • At incorporation in 1871 the town had only about 147 residents. Within just a couple decades, thanks largely to transportation and industry, the population grew significantly

  2. Historic Architecture & Districts

      • Körner’s Folly is one of the more unusual architectural landmarks in the town. Built around 1880, it’s known for its quirky design: multiple levels, many rooms, decorative architecture, etc. It started as a portfolio display for its builder, Jules Körner.

      • Kernersville has several historic districts recognized on the National Register, such as the South Main Street Historic District and the North Cherry Street Historic District. These include homes and buildings in styles like Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, etc.

    3. The Stafford-Greenfield House & Moving Historic Homes

    • The Stafford-Greenfield House began as a modest cabin around 1840, was expanded in 1856, and later (in 1987) physically moved from its original site to a new location a few hundred feet away. It’s now a bed & breakfast. Moving historic homes is not uncommon in some places, but it’s always interesting when a structure with that much history is relocated rather than demolished
