Education & School History in Colfax
Small one-room schoolhouses were established in the area by 1771. Local citizens built them, and teachers were paid by parents.
Over time, the community’s school (Colfax Elementary) evolved: by 1925, the school was awarding diplomas for 11th grade; eventually, larger brick school buildings and school buses were introduced.
Colfax was once called “Dover”
Before the community was known as Colfax, it was historically called the Dover Community. Early settlers came from Virginia and Pennsylvania, attracted by good soil for farming.
The name “Colfax” comes from Schuyler Colfax, who was Vice President of the United States under Ulysses S. Grant (1869-1873)
Every fall, Colfax hosts the Colfax Persimmon Festival.
a unique local event that celebrates the native American persimmon fruit. It’s held at the Historic Stafford Farm (dating back to the 1780s), and features old-time music, blacksmithing, living history demonstrations, and of course, plenty of persimmon pudding — a recipe passed down in Piedmont families for generations.
