Incorporation & Growth
Archdale was founded (or “established”) 1786, but it wasn’t always an incorporated city. It first got a kind of municipal status in 1874, then re-incorporated in 1969.
One of the motivations behind incorporation was infrastructure: because the area had heavy clay soil, getting reliable water and sewer service was a challenge and something residents cared about enough to vote on.

Archdale has invested in its green spaces: for example, Creekside Park is a major community resource with trails, ballfields, playgrounds, etc.
They also have a disc golf course, greenways, open natural areas adjacent to Creekside Park (over 100 acres combined for various recreational amenities) plus a recreation center and senior center.
Original Name & Quaker Roots
Archdale used to be called Bush Hill. It was a predominantly Quaker settlement in its early days.
The town was renamed “Archdale” in honor of John Archdale, an early Quaker governor/proprietor of Carolina.
